  • THE COMMUNITY | John Wong, Vancouver

    ride cycle club

Get to know John – any Lonsdale rider or instructor knows John and his dedication to RIDE. Having completed the 30 Day Challenge in just 16 days, he’s proof that a strong, supportive community and encouraging instructors can help you crush even the most ambitious goals.

What do you do for your 9-5?

I’m a helicopter technician. Work for a company that maintains, repair and overhauls dynamic components of the aircraft.

If your bestie were to describe you in three words, what would they be?

    Culinarian, Dedicated, and Adventurous.

How long have you been coming to RIDE?

About a year. Started in August of 2015, but stopped going after a few months. Then I heard about Lonsdale studio opening and offering free underground rides with the new instructor trainees. That lit the fire to get my ass back on the saddle. Now I’m hooked!

What motivates you to get your ass to class?

    Best ?’s in town! ?

How has RIDE impacted your life?

RIDE has help me get back into shape to live a healthier lifestyle. There’s nothing else like it. Spending 50 mins in a dark room sweating it out with like-minded people.

Outside of your 9-5 – tell us about all the badass things you’re up to

Snowshoe 13 kms in a blizzard for a one night stay in the mountains and back the next day. So much to explore in beautiful British Columbia.

In your opinion, what makes RIDE’s community so unique?

I think it’s like a cult. Many of the riders including myself join in this 50 min sweat session religiously. AM or PM, weekday or weekend we connect at the studio.

    Favourite instructor and why?

    They’re all so good!
Going to name a few, ff that’s okay.

My current go to is Joce. She kicks my butt every class. Combined with the awesome playlist and her wicked moves. Keeps me coming back for more even though she laughs at my mistakes when I’m in the front row. Definitely give her class a try if you haven’t yet. She’ll get you on the right foot in no time.

Barb is da ? – so intense. Classes are so loud with so much energy you’ll definitely feel the beat.

Danielle is ? – her vibe on the podium is amazing. Playlists are fun and lots of energy. Love her RIDE voice, even though she’s yelling at you to get your ass up!

Taylor is awesome! He’s definitely pushed me to be better. His classes are super fun but the intensity is picking up. I’m enjoying the challenge though. Killin’ the playlist! #brosridetoo

    Best RIDE memory?

So many to choose from… definitely have to mention the 30 Day Challenge. I knew I could finish it no problem. Just in how many days I could do in. I had booked vacation for the middle of the month for a week, so my time was cut short. In my mind I wanted to finish the challenge before I left on the 17th of May. New challenge accepted! Lol 30in16. So that’s what I did! Went to RIDE Lonsdale every day except 1 class at the Hamilton location. It was mostly double classes per day except Fridays, only 1 slots available for my schedule. Made up for it when a new class time was posted for Sunday Funday. TRIPLE! Definitely struggled that day. It was just a handful of classes left to finish the challenge after that. Felt amazing after finishing the challenge! Definitely crushed some goals. #30in16

Meeting so many great people during the challenge was amazing. Everyone supporting each other during their journey through the challenge. Congrats to everyone that crushed the 30 Day Challenge.

What other workouts do you do outside of RIDE?

I run, hike, snowshoe and circuit train with friends.

    Song you’ve got on repeat?

Dua Lipa – new rules (Alison Wonderland remix)

If you could brunch with any male/lady boss (past or present), who would it be?

Past boss that I still keep in touch with and currently brunch/lunch with once a week.

If you were to give a s/o to a local entrepreneur, who would it be?

My parents. They owned/ran a bakery in Burnaby until they retired. Their passion to bake created the culinarian I am today.

Describe your ideal Saturday in the city.

Spin, brunch, nap, golf and snowshoe.

    Who motivates you?

    Everyone! Hahaha
Parents, family, friends and coworkers. Always want to do better!

Fave quote or words to live by?

    Just smile!

    Last book you read was….

    .
    .
It’s been a while since I’ve read an actual book… last one I remember is American Sniper.
A friend recommended “puzzle of pieces” so that’s next on the list.

What does RIDE mean to you?

A place to release toxic energy. Leave everything in the room and floor. Walk out with a clear mind.

  • THE COMMUNITY | Meg Coffey, Toronto

    ride cycle club

Get to know Meg – a Toronto rider who has been an integral part of our Toronto community since day one. We can always count on Meg to show up – she loves a challenge, and keeps a signature cool, calm and collected vibe even through the most intense fast-legs. Meg also co-taught a RIDE x Flow in the Six (yoga) class earlier this year at lululemon which was a sold-out hit.

What do you do for your 9-5?

I am the Community Relations Manager at Love Child Social House which is a
multi-use venue designed for connection and collaboration to fuse Work, Play and
Grow and for my side hustle I teach yoga at Yoga Tree Studios.

If your bestie were to describe you in three words, what would they be?
    Ambitious. Confident. Independent.

How long have you been coming to RIDE?
Since the UNDRGRND and I have not looked back.

What motivates you to get your ass to class?
    The sweat, music and people.

How has RIDE impacted your life?
I have met so many amazing and like-minded individuals who I have developed
meaningful and long lasting friendships with. It’s actually crazy to me that it’s only
been a ~year and I have so many new best friends. I also had never worked out
before 8am in my life before RIDE, and now I’m obsessed with 6 & 7am classes.

Tell us about all the badass things you’re up to
I co-developed a hip-hop music vinyasa class with a brilliant yoga instructor and
dancer, Amanda Donato called Flow in the 6ix, inspired by Toronto’s incredible
urban music scene. The class is still rooted in traditional yoga, but really changes the
game for those who have a hard time finding presence and getting out of their head
in class. The continuous and dynamic movement mixed with loud music helps create
    that space for students.

In your opinion, what makes RIDE’s community so unique?
I have pretty much visited every fitness studio in the city, and RIDE’s community is
hands-down the most impressive for turning the workout into an experience and
social activity. I literally plan my week around RIDE classes, so I can see some of my
favourite people while getting an amazing sweat. The focus is on the movement in
the class, but what’s been created outside of the studio is really special.

    Favourite instructor and why?
It’s so hard to pick just one! Each instructor is unique and has their own style which
I love. I will say Alex challenges me the most and pushes me to (read: off) my edge,
Dani’s Sat AM is the best way to kick off the weekend and DJ Winter’s playlists are my fav.

    Best RIDE memory?
Ride vs. Flow in the 6ix. Matt and I co-taught a RIDE followed by a yoga class in The
Local and it was awesome to bring my two things together.

What other workouts do you do outside of RIDE?
Besides yoga, I love going to Barry’s Bootcamp, Studio Lagree and MISFITSTUDIO.
All of these workouts compliment each other and thank god for all the
like-minded/psycho friends I have met through RIDE who will go to 2-3 classes a
    day with me.

    Song you’ve got on repeat?
I have literally not stopped listening to The Black Panther album, seriously it’s so
good. If you know me, you know I love all Kanye, Drake and Bieber, and I am an
advocate of Toronto artists – Majid Jordan, dvsn and Mickey Blue are definitely favs.

If you could brunch with any lady boss (past or present), who would it
    be?
No shame that I’m gonna say Kim Kardashian. She absolutely owns her brand and
I’d love to have a conversation with her and Kanye would also be invited.

If you were to give a s/o to a local entrepreneur, who would it be?
Amber Joliat, the creator and beautiful mind behind MISFITSTUDIO. Her classes are
pure magic, I highly recommend Fusion – her signature class blending Pilates, yoga
and dance. Also, Emily Palley-Samson has recently created her own tassel earring
brand and I literally never wear jewelry but I have two pairs and I wear them all the
    time now. Check her out!

Describe your ideal Saturday in the city.
Definitely RIDE/Barry’s/Yoga (or all three…) followed by Union brunch, sparkling
rosé in the park, and definitely an Aperol Spritz at some point.

    Who motivates you?
All the Girl Bosses. I have so many driven and impactful females in my life who are
    so inspiring.

Fave quote or words to live by?
    Movement is medicine.

    Last book you read was….
Eastern Body, Western Mind by Anodea Judith.

What does RIDE mean to you?
    Unity. RIDE OR DIE

  • RIDE OR DIE | Julie Chutter, RIDE Instructor

    ride cycle club

Get to know Julie – for our lucky Vancouver regulars, her smile and infectious energy can be seen and felt at the studio on the daily. Since RIDE’s inception, Julie has grown from “the worst counter” to Lead Instructor who teaches with so much heart – every single RIDE. She’s had a huge impact on the growth of the RIDE community and we’re so grateful for her dedication to the tribe.

    Where did you grow up?

I grew up on a cattle ranch in Merritt, BC. I consider myself so lucky that I had the upbringing that I had, we were always outside whether it was building forts, riding horses or changing irrigation pipes. I don’t think I ever wore shoes! I’ve been in Vancouver for 13 years but home is still barefoot on the ranch.

Can you remember your first RIDE class? How long did it take until you realized you wanted to become an instructor?

I never actually had a first RIDE class, I was part of the first group of training before RIDE was open so I had no idea what I was in for. Training was a challenge physically and I wasn’t prepared for how hard it would be mentally. I really struggled and it took me a long time to believe that I could instruct let alone motivate a class. Not only was I the worst counter, couldn’t find the beat and overall just was a horrid rider, but I couldn’t get comfortable exposing myself to a room of people. It took me a solid 4 months of training and year of teaching to finally hit a point where I felt like maybe I belonged in the room.

How would you describe your teaching style?

That’s a hard question to answer for yourself but I think I teach the way that I want to workout. I asked Brooke, she said “Athletic and Ever Changing’, Barb said ‘Powerful’, Michael said “Honest, Present, Disciplined”.

Best part of being an instructor is…

You meet so many people that you would never normally get a chance to discover. Creating those new relationships, finding lasting friendship and just getting to know people from all walks of life really is what makes being an instructor special. We are very lucky at RIDE to have that. I’ve met some extremely special people in that room.

    Track you’ve had on repeat?

Magic Addiction – No Mana. Cannot stop.

    AM or PM rides?

    DAYTIME.

Favourite way to sweat outside of RIDE?

Not one in particular, boxing ruins me like nothing else (in the best way), I love a good run or even beach soccer at my cabin with my family.

How has becoming a RIDE instructor changed you?

I was a baby when I started at RIDE. I guess it showed me that sometimes you don’t know what’s going to happen and you just have to take a chance. I also finally have quads.

Go-to quote or words to live by?

You’re sick of this one by now because I say it every time but…”It’s supposed be hard, if it wasn’t hard everyone would do it. The hard is what makes it great”. It’s just true, in all aspects of life.

    Who motivates you?

My Mom. She has never given up on anything and is a daily reminder to me that no matter the odds, you can beat them with the right attitude. I hope I grow up to be half the woman she is. Moms are the best.

    What’s your #1 life hack?

    High physical pain tolerance.

Where can we find you on a Saturday afternoon in the city?

Well it’s Saturday and I’m writing this from my bed after training our new instructors. So napping. Saturday is my Friday 😉

Any hidden or not so hidden talents?

Put me on a horse and I’ll rope you.

If you could brunch with any person (past or present), who would it be and why?

My Grandpa! He was the coolest guy I know, you could never be in a room with him and not smile. He had this special way of greeting you when you opened the door…a booming ‘heyyyyy-ooo’. Miss you gramps!

Best memory since you joined RIDE?

Riding with the instructors in training when they start to teach – there’s nothing like watching someone you have trained months with get up on the podium and crush their first class. It’s exciting, overwhelming, nerve-wracking and overall just such a proud moment.

Last weekend I also taught a class for THE TOUR – an event where attendees took a BarreGT/AllCity/Lagree class then ended for a final RIDE. It was amazing, 4 hours of sweating to raise money for the Vancouver Women’s Health Collective. They were such an inspiring group of people smiling and sweating the entire time. Loved this day and felt incredibly lucky to be a part of it.

#1 piece of advice for someone looking to have a killer RIDE?

Give yourself permission to experience whatever comes up! Every RIDE is going to feel different day-to-day, so let whatever needs to happen, happen. But really, relax and have fun, it’s just riding a bike 😉

What has you stoked on life right now?

Lots of things! I’m just really happy.  Adventures are unfolding, travel plans in the works…life is great.

What does RIDE mean to you?

RIDE isn’t just a workout, its an experience. It’s a journey that changes from class to class and sometimes trying to explain what it is leaves you at a loss for words. There’s nothing else like it.

Find Julie each week on the Hamilton and Lonsdale schedules.

  • THE COMMUNITY | Adrienne Lui, Vancouver

Get to know Adrienne – a Hamilton Studio regular whose energy and enthusiasm gets the whole room vibing. Learn about Adrienne’s journey with us and the impact it’s had on her life since her first (memorable) RIDE.

What do you do for your 9-5?

I would like to be spinning if I could!

If your bestie were to describe you in two words, what would they be?

    Bubbly
    Feisty

How long have you been coming to RIDE?

My first RIDE was March 7th 2016, and it became part my routine within a week. Wow! So it’s been 2 years and 3 months?

What motivates you to get your ass to class?

The feeling of coming out of class feeling accomplished. The feeling that you have let a lot of weight off, not just physically but mentally. It’s wild how addictive this feeling is, you just never know how much you can let go of within a 45-50 min class. The moment you are trying to catch your breath you know you’ve grown stronger by letting go of so much negativity in your life.

How has RIDE impacted your life?

So many ways! It’s a big part of my life now. Not only do I feel stronger physically, but I’ve been able to endure so many more challenges in life. Everytime I am faced with a challenge, I think to myself, “if I could get through a triple ride or Michael’s no-weight-session classes, I can get through whatever this is.”

So yes, I feel like I’ve been more courageous and headstrong, most importantly, I’ve learned the real meaning of “mind over matter”. When I think to myself that I’ve pushed myself to the limit, I go back to those words and I am able to go beyond what I thought I couldn’t.

Outside of your 9-5 – tell us about all the badass things you’re up to

I have an obsession with cookware and cooking gadgets. I invite friends over for feasts and cook food enough for a village and make sure that everything is all portioned out for each guest, a side of salad, a side of aburi salmon…I love sides! (like how the Japanese do it, but less refined of course!)

I am also quite adventurous with my cheeses. You’ll find me chatting up the staff at the cheese counter in Whole Foods, sharing cheese thoughts, and asking them to cut me small portions of each cheese so I could get a little taster of everything for a cheese board night. (With figs of course!)

In your opinion, what makes RIDE’s community so unique?

The fact that everyone has the same goal to let go and move forward. We share the same determination to step up and change something about ourselves everyday.

    Favourite instructor and why?

I’m gonna go with the whole “every-instructor-brings-something-different thing” – I honestly feel like every instructor has very different qualities that makes me come out of class and think, that was lit! If I were to pick one instructor that gives me the most rewarding experience and kicks my ass like no other, that would be Michael – I come out feeling like I ran up the Grouse Grind, followed by a boxing class at All-City Athletics and finally, a 10k marathon. No kidding!

    Best RIDE memory?

This is a very difficult one. I’m going to answer all the questions and come back to this one.

    Ok I’m back.

It would be my first class at Ride Cycle Club. I remember very clearly that my first class was a power ride with Noah. Rowan helped me with my bike then quickly clipped into her bike, she turned around and whispered, “Don’t worry! Everybody in the front row are all instructors or staff here, don’t feel intimidated, just do your best!”

Before Noah started, he did the whole “is this anyone’s first RIDE?” thing and I raised my hand up, he gave me a look and everyone else in front of me turned around and gave me the whole “Oh nooo, you’re in for a treat”. Loved it, died a little inside. At that point, I’ve done a handful of spin classes and was hopping around testing out studios, so I didn’t feel murdered right away, but ohh dear. I felt it all hit me the next day and thought to myself, “heeeelll yeaaa, THIS is it” then the rest is history.

What other workouts do you do outside of RIDE?

I used to run everyday, was a competitive swimmer and basketball player, then adulting came along, and spin replaced all that.

    Song you’ve got on repeat?

My Spotify playlist consists of 90% spin songs – King and Don’t Leave by Gryffin. (Thanks Brooke and Julie!)

If you could brunch with any male/lady boss (past or present), who would it be?

    Nigella Lawson and Barack Obama.

If you were to give a s/o to a local entrepreneur, who would it be?

Currently, Michael Gorenstein, owner of the newly opened Yum Sweet Shop. He left a very remarkable impression on me.

Describe your ideal Saturday in the city.

Wake up to a sunny day, go to Michael’s 11:45am, eat baked goods, scenic walk through Granville island, visit an artisanal grocery store, purchase the whole store, make fresh pappardelle, cook up a storm, eat.

    Who motivates you?

My parents, and occasionally my brother Matthew (ew).

Fave quote or words to live by?

Treat people the way you want to be treated.

    Last book you read was….

    Simply Nigella – Nigella Lawson.

What does RIDE mean to you?

It’s a place where I can be amongst people with similar goals and values. To me, it’s also a place of no excuses, we have 24-hours a day, what’s one hour in a 24-hour day to invest in yourself and push yourself to your limits?

  • THE COMMUNITY | Jonathan & Ian, Toronto

    ride cycle club

Meet Jonathan & Ian – Ossington’s resident RIDE or DIE couple who completed a combined 60 rides in 18 days during our 30 Day Challenge (Jonathan completed the challenge in 16 days, with Ian right there with him in 18 days). Come to any 6 or 7am in Toronto and you’re pretty much guaranteed to see one of them or both front and center, whipping their towels and tapping it back like there’s no tomorrow.

What do you do for your 9-5?

    J – I work in sales.

I – Art Direction for Sephora.

If your bestie were to describe you in three words, what would they be?

    J – Creature of habit.

I – Quiet, calm and tall.

How long have you been coming to RIDE?

J – Since the studio opened in Toronto last March. I was going to the UNDGRND for a bit too.

I – I started officially last April, so just about a year now.

What motivates you to get your ass to class?

J – Not paying the late cancellation fee? Lol! But seriously…waking up at 5:30am to do anything let alone work out was definitely an adjustment. Now it’s just the norm and the fact that other people are just as crazy as me gets me out the door for those 6am classes. Knowing that I’m going to see friends and get in a good sweat…that motivates me. It’s also a place where I can focus on just myself and tune the rest of the world out. We all need that sometimes.

I – I like the group atmosphere. It’s a lot easier to motivate myself in a room with 50 other people all doing the same thing. Plus, the music is fun and it gives you a good endorphin ‘high’.

How has RIDE impacted your life?

J – RIDE was something I needed and didn’t realize I needed. Fitness was never a part of my life and now I can’t see my life without it. RIDE has also introduced me to an amazing community of people that I’m so grateful for. I’m a better version of myself because of RIDE. I also have never owned so much athletic wear or done more laundry in my life.

I – Aside from the obvious health benefits, it gives me something to look forward to every day (especially when I’m having a bad day). The sense of community is great and I’ve met a ton of awesome people because of it.

Outside of your 9-5 – tell us about all the badass things you’re up to.

J – I think I’m actually pretty boring. However, now that summer has finally shown up I think a lot more “badass” things are upon us. All the park, patio and bbq hangs…

I’m also very big on being a tourist in your own city. There are so many “badass” places to explore and things to do that are within arms reach. I’m excited to do more of that.

I – I’m pretty boring too. I do love to travel though. Jon and I spent 2 weeks traveling through Italy last Fall and it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life so far.

In your opinion, what makes RIDE’s community so unique?

J – All worlds collide at RIDE. I’ve been able to revive and strengthen relationships with friends and made so many amazing new ones. It’s a nice feeling knowing that I can walk into RIDE and I will always have a friend there. It’s kinda like the show Cheers where “everyone knows your name”.

I – There’s like zero attitude or pretension at RIDE. It’s funny because we all joke that it’s like a ‘cult’, but really everyone is welcome and at any fitness level. It’s just a good time!

    Favourite instructor and why?

J –Everyone is great for different reasons. Top of mind I’d have to say Alex. She really knows how to kick my ass and motivate me to be better! She also bullies *ahem* motivates me to go to classes I never intended on going to…even if that means it’s my third RIDE of the day. And I love her for that.

Dani, she really knows how to get my day going and has introduced me to so much new music. I’m always asking her what songs she’s playing.

Winter and Rebecca..sometimes I feel like they’ve stolen my iPod and just pressed play. I could really make a point for why everyone is my “favourite”. I don’t like this question, I love everyone….NEXT!

I – I think they’re all great this isn’t a fair question! I will say that Alex and Taylor really push your limits the most though. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing? Haha.

    Best RIDE memory?

J –There have been so many. One would be my birthday ride when Alex let me RIDE on the podium with her. It was a class filled with family and friends. I felt such a high riding on the podium and seeing it from that perspective was super cool. Completing the 30 Day Challenge would be my most recent highlight. I wanted to push myself to see how quickly I could do it. I finished in 16 days and I am super proud of myself. Also I think my face still hurts from smiling at the RIDE vs. SPICE GIRLS class (Cat prancing around the room in heels just makes me smile.)

I –Definitely riding the podium with Alex was memorable. Completing my first ‘30 RIDES in 30 DAYS’ which seems like nothing now but was a big deal at the time! Or maybe when we cheered on the 10k runners outside along the waterfront. Good times!

What other workouts do you do outside of RIDE?

J– I’ve been really getting back into Lagree lately. It’s such a great compliment and contrast to RIDE. I’ve also tried Barry’s a few times. Always a challenge but I’ll keep trying at it.

I – I’m awful, it’s really all I do. I have tried Barry’s a few times and will likely be going back. I also used to swim competitively and I do miss that.

    Song you’ve got on repeat?

J – I have such random taste in music. That being said, I grew up on early 90s hip hop and R&B so thats always on repeat. Think Brandy, En Vogue, Busta Rhymes, Biggie, Tribe, TLC, Missy, New Edition, etc.

I – Everything Now by Arcade Fire! We also saw them in concert last year and they were amazing.

If you could brunch with any male/lady boss (past or present), who would it be?

    J – Ummmm Oprah!!!

    I – I’ll just got with what he said…Oprah.

If you were to give a s/o to a local entrepreneur, who would it be?

J & I – Our girlfriend Char opened a women’s clothing store on Dundas West called Nevada Rose. She has some really amazing, fun and unique pieces that I would even wear.

Describe your ideal Saturday in the city.

J – Now that it’s summer…RIDE, brunch, hanging out in Trinity Bellwoods with the crew. Or maybe a day at island.

I – Any shopping and eating experience works for me!

    Who motivates you?

J – Ian does. I’m so lucky to have him and he motivates me to be a better person in all areas of my life including RIDE. RIDE has actually made our relationship stronger. Eww that sounds sooooo cheesy (but true).

I – Thanks Jon haha. Likewise!!!! My Ride or Die…

Fave quote or words to live by?

J – “Never regret anything because at one point it is exactly what you wanted”.

I – Look up the poem Invictus by William Ernest Henley. Always loved this but too many words to write down here.

    Last book you read was….

    J– Do magazines count?

I – Ugh I can’t remember, and I used to read all the time. I should probably fix that.

What does RIDE mean to you?

    J – It means EVERYTHING!

I – RIDE is my happy place.

  • RIDE OR DIE | Kyle Salive, RIDE Instructor

    ride cycle club

Get to know Kyle – also known as the Ossington Spin God. Known for his full-house RIDES and hip-hop heavy playlists, Kyle’s classes have a pre-game vibe that gets the mirrors steaming – even at 7am on a Thursday. He offers a unique combination of intensity and compassion – he’ll push you to work your hardest, and you’ll always feel like he has your back.

    Where did you grow up?

    LaSalle Ontario (right outside Windsor).

Can you remember your first RIDE class? How long did it take until you realized you wanted to become an instructor?

My first RIDE class was an audition to become a RIDE instructor. I knew right away I wanted to be an instructor after first meeting Ashley, but I was wildly underprepared for what RIDE was and what level of class I was going into.

How would you describe your teaching style?

I expect a lot out of my riders and it’s definitely tough but my main goal is to make sure everyone feels connected to the music, to themselves, and to each other. I try to create an environment where people don’t ever think twice about yelling, pulsing a little harder or bigger. RIDE for me is the best social experience and should always be fun – even when you are fully exhausted.

Best part of being an instructor is…

When you see everything click and a rider fully gets it. People always ask me what makes RIDE different and when I answer the question I usually start putting my hand over my heart and tapping my chest a bit as I’m trying to explain and I say “It’s a feeling”. There are no words to fully explain it – but I can definitely see when someone “gets it”.

    Track you’ve had on repeat?

Hurt to look – Swae Lee

    AM or PM rides?

PM – I want my RIDE to be the equivalent of a pre drink.

Favourite way to sweat outside of RIDE?

    Barry’s Bootcamp and F45.

How has becoming a RIDE instructor changed you?

Confidence. It took 6 months and many conversations about who I was as a person but the training made me more confident in my choices and made me realize some of my personality traits that I wasn’t present to. Put spotlights on yourself and raise yourself on a platform and it amplifies the good and bad.

Go-to quote or words to live by?

Better to be quiet and thought a fool than speak and remove all doubt.

    Who motivates you?

My fellow instructors. We all share music and talk about stuff we want to do and try and it’s crazy being in someone else’s class when they drop a new song you’ve never heard or say or do something you wouldn’t think of. We all push each other in the best most positive way.

    Favourite book?

The Amazing Adventures of Kavilier and Clay.

    What’s your #1 life hack?

If you order Ubereats/popeyes on your way home it will cut down the amount of time you’re sitting and waiting for it.

Where can we find you on a Saturday afternoon in the city?

    At The Local.

Any hidden or not so hidden talents?

My only talent in the world is being calm. It’s bad sometimes because maybe I’m too calm……….

If you could brunch with any person (past or present), who would it be and why?

Just had to chat about this with a colleague and we decided that you wouldn’t want to go after someone who you idolize (Kanye West) because you wouldn’t want to be gushing about how amazing they are. “I’m sure you get this all the time but you’re the best and this thing you did means so much to me” – that kind of person. So that being said I’d go for this guy who hosts these Youtube videos I’ve been watching lately done by Complex called the Blueprint. His name is Noah and he’s like a Creative Director or something but I think his proximity to all these amazing creatives and business geniuses would yield some cool lessons and stories and he’d have a lot of insight to provide.

Best memory since you joined RIDE?

Coming into the studio for the first time was mind-blowing. We had been doing the undrgrnd and training for a long time then seeing it all be real and come to life was the best. Also taking all the instructor’s classes in Vancouver when we went out there to train just showed me what was possible. They were doing things I couldn’t even dream of and seeing how advanced their riders were and what they were doing. We didn’t have our own studio at the time and I was like “Oh shit this is what it actually is.” We were riding for 6+ hours a day but it was so fucking cool.

#1 piece of advice for someone looking to have a killer RIDE?

The times when you want to freak out and squeeze the handlebars and try that much harder are when you need to breathe and relax the most. Through training I would try to force a lot of things because I wanted to get it faster. But to get the beat, stand up on fast legs, pulse on beat etc. – you actually have to slow down and get out of your head and not overthink it. It’s so counterintuitive but it’s the only way I can explain it to people.

What has you stoked on life right now?

Gratitude has me stoked on life. Being grateful for what you have and realizing that if you’re a spin instructor and have a full time job and have a friends that care about you and you can order uber eats your life is probably pretty great.

What does RIDE mean to you?

Community. Seeing everyone talk after class, show up to our events, go out with us after and then do it again the next week is something you can’t buy. Front desk, owners, instructors – we all love RIDE and doing what we do and it shows.

  • 100 RIDES IN 82 DAYS | Brigid Towler

    ride cycle club

Meet Brigid – one of the happiest humans we’ve had the pleasure of getting to know who took on a personal challenge of completing 100 rides in 100 days. Brigid crushed her goal and became an integral part of the RIDE Ossington community along the way. Known for always smiling and knowing everyone’s names, we’re stoked to be featuring Brigid and her badass accomplishment.

100 rides in 82 days – tell us about your personal challenge!

I work for a great wellness company and as part of our culture we set personal wellness goals each quarter. I had set a goal of 100 classes in 100 days and within the first month found I was out pacing that. I intended to get ahead of schedule in case it was hard to keep up over the holidays. It wasn’t, and by the beginning of January I changed the goal to 90 days. Like a dog chasing its tail I wanted to beat that too. 82!

    So…did you enjoy it?!

YES! Not every day, but that’s why it’s a challenge, right? I enjoyed it more than I expected, I loved the way it felt to get closer to the goal, and the community found along the way.

Who/what sparked the idea to do it?

When I joined RIDE in the spring there were these incredible riders doing a 30 rides in 30 day challenge. I remember thinking that was totally wild, “I could never do that. Why would I want to!?” I lost 20 pounds in my first 2 months of joining, then went on a dream trip to Kenya and South Africa. When I got back I couldn’t wait to get back on the bike, and it was the first time I had ever wanted to workout. There are books written on the mental benefits of exercise but to really witness that within myself has been fascinating. When the idea of 30 rides in 30 days seemed doable, I decided to celebrate that shift with something that felt a little more scary.

What was a highlight of the challenge?

    I’m picking 2.
#98: Cat extended me the honour of riding podium with her for a full class. It was totally a dream come true and I went in to shock when she asked.

#38: I visit Vancouver often for work, and stay at a hotel near the Hamilton studio to RIDE at the original spot! For a team outing, my full department booked bikes and we had a blast in Rowan’s class. They have listened to me talk about RIDE a whole lot and it was really special to share that with my team.

How does your endurance/fitness levels compare from day 1 to 82?

There’s no doubt in my mind that this is the strongest I’ve been in my life! More energy, more focus, better sleeps.

When all you wanted to do was hit the snooze button – what kept you motivated?

    Dani’s abs.

Having tried them all…if you had to pick a favourite instructor, who would it be and why?

No way, I won’t do it! You can’t make me choose; they are all awesome in their own style. But I will spotlight two classes with a special place in my heart:

Saturdays, 9:35 with Cat: My happy place. It was Cat who taught me how to RIDE and the instructor that first had me hooked. Her choreography feels like the release of a good yoga pose. I always leave having pushed myself harder than I thought I could that day, feeling grounded and bright.

Sunday, 10:40 with Matt: The highlight of most weekends. The room is filled with friends and we’re probably going to hear some Drake and Kanye. Plus, the dance moves are not to be missed. Guaranteed good time when Matt is grooving off the bike. And if he makes you run to “Fade”, don’t say I didn’t warn you.

Any fellow riders you want to shout-out for their support?

Jon, Ian, Tracey, Tania, Lindsey, Meg, Meg and Meg, Micah, Emily, Steven, Andrew, Marko, Alex, Tyler, Natty, Cole, Chris, Andra, Kelly, Reilly, Anum, James, Morgan, Amy + Steven, Adrian, and Ashley from Bond.

Now that you’ve got the challenge under your belt – what’s next?!

100 in 70, maybe? Ha! Not anytime soon. I’m really looking forwarding keeping my unlimited membership at RIDE, and exploring other workouts that support that. It’s been neat to have exercise goals beyond weight and I’m excited to try fun classes that will make me stronger on the bike. I’m stoked to check out Amber and Rachel at MISFITSTUDIO, Chris at Barry’s Bootcamp, and fellow rider Meg Coffey at YogaTree.

Anything else you’d like to add?

ASHLEY, Instructors and RIDE team, there is no doubt in my mind ya’ll are the best kind of people. Thank you for your early mornings, late nights, and constant fun.

And finally….what does RIDE mean to you?

    Community. Accountability. Freedom. Growth. ?

  • RIDE OR DIE | Brooke Roth, RIDE Instructor

    ride cycle club

Get to know Brooke – one of our OG Vancouver instructors who has been with us since day one. Brooke brings intensity and motivation to every AM RIDE – and is often spotted with her daughter, aka resident RIDE baby, Bowie.

    Where did you grow up?

Toronto Ontario! Then to the burbs in Aurora.

Can you remember your first RIDE class?

Yes I do! It was with JJ one of our owners! At the time I was already teaching at another studio which is where I met Ash and I knew right away I wanted to move studios and be part of the RIDE team. I was really lucky because she let me start training with her right away and I started to teach at RIDE just a couple months after they opened!

How long did it take until you realized you wanted to become an instructor?

Not long, I took one class and I was hooked. I immediately got certified – I won’t tell you when because you will think I’m 100 years old.

How would you describe your teaching style?

    Intense and motivating, Cardio Therapy.

Best part of being an instructor is…

Being able to see your riders improve and getting smiles from them always makes my day.

    Track you’ve had on repeat

Aahhhhhhhhh oh god, like it’s different every week. Right now LANE 8 – no end in sight/outro.

    AM or PM rides?

Definitely AM, every class I teach is before 9AM!

Favourite way to sweat outside of RIDE?

RUN! Vancouver is the BEST place to run. The seawall is incredible, it never gets old.

How has becoming a RIDE instructor changed you?

RIDE has changed me and my life is so many different ways. The most important is the friends I have made, literally best friends. People I can’t imagine my life without. People I love and adore.

Go-to quote or words to live by?

Choose the challenge, except the change. I am so guilty of avoiding change, it’s literally my biggest flaw. Once I realized that trying to challenge yourself in every aspect of life and really working on being able to react and respond to unexpected circumstances, change started to become manageable – not easy, but manageable.

    Who motivates you?

Ultimately I believe motivation comes from within. But choosing how you spend your time and who you spend it with and making sure that those people and places always make you smile should be all you need to stay motivated.

    Favourite book?

How to Murder Your Life by Cat Marnell, it’s literally the most interesting, intense, hilarious book. I read it twice in a row and by read I mean listened to the audiobook lol!

    What’s your #1 life hack?

Bribing my daughter Bowie with tic tacs.

Where can we find you on a Saturday afternoon in the city?

Definitely at any park in Kitsilano trying to tire my kid out! She literally doesn’t stop!

Any hidden or not so hidden talents?

    Hidden talent – public speaking!

Best memory since you joined RIDE?

There have been so many, it’s really hard to pick one. A Lot of them are from our RIDE events. We are really active in the community with outdoor rides and it’s honestly the most amazing feeling to be able to participate. Lululemon Seawheeze, Khatsalano Days are just a couple of my favs.

#1 piece of advice for someone looking to have a killer RIDE?

Embrace the journey the instructor takes you on. Every class is curated to be different, never expect easy, never expect anything in particular. Sweat and try your best. If you do that you will have a killer RIDE.

What has you stoked on life right now?

My new baby that’s due in May! Not excited at all to go through labor again but obsessed with having a teenie chubby baby!

What does RIDE mean to you?

It’s hard to put into words. If I had to rate it it would be a rating of 20 out of 10! It means everything.

  • THE COMMUNITY | John Ferrie, Vancouver

    ride cycle club

Get to know John – this creative hustler embraces so much of what RIDE is all about – a love of community, a thirst for sweat, and an incredible energy that lifts people up around him. Read on to learn about RIDE’s profound impact on John’s life – as John says, age really is just a number.

What do you do for your 9-5?

Rebel artist by day, renegade waiter by night. Also seeking the holy grail.

If your bestie were to describe you in three words, what would they be?

    Gregarious, driven, creative.

How long have you been coming to RIDE?

Exactly 2 years ago to the day.

What motivates you to get your ass to class?

Everything. I wake up in the morning with my day planned around my RIDE. Sometimes two rides and on several occasions 3 rides. I have the week planned and I just know I’m going to RIDE. Some days when I drag myself out of bed and think “I could easily just take today off”, I know I won’t be happy if I do that. Sometimes even as the first song is starting I think, “oh man, do I have an hour of this in me?” But then the sweat breaks and the moves kick in and then I am so happy I am doing it. My mind shuts off and I sometimes cannot stop laughing in class as things crack me up. Before I know it it’s over. I am always glad when I have done a class. I am never happy when I skip a day.

How has RIDE impacted your life?

Goodness, in every way. I have been “spinning” for 15 years. I was moving around and trying all the new studios that opened – none of them were terribly exciting and some were just plane awful. Then I tried RIDE. I thought I was a seasoned rider. I couldn’t get over how exciting it was – heart pounding with this incredible pulse like nothing I had ever experienced. Sweat dripping off my bike creating 18 inch puddles around me. I’m a little older and truthfully was feeling my age. I was also overweight and thought, “meh, this is me in my 50’s!” As I mounted more and more classes I found I got good at it. Then I got really good. I lost 45 pounds at RIDE. You’re also talking to a guy who has been “shushed” his entire life. The thing about RIDE is we are encouraged to be loud – to whistle, cheer, scream and cry. I have experienced every one of those emotions at RIDE, and it’s also really fucking fun.

Outside of your 9-5 – tell us about all the badass things you’re up to

I’m a fucking rebel. I also ski, mountain bike, road bike and rollerblade. But so often those types of things are just activities. RIDE is a fucking workout and it’s totally badass. I’m an artist so being a rebel is built into my DNA. I’m also a bit of a recluse. I actually require time on my own to figure out what the hell I am communicating in my paintings. I have been including the rebel symbol of RIDE, so those in the know can spot it.

In your opinion, what makes RIDE’s community so unique?

As cool and sleek as the night club space. Hands down, it is the people at RIDE that make it unique. You spot a good rider and try and emulate what they are doing in a RIDE, or help out a fellow rider who is having trouble finding the beat. The next thing a friendship is struck up after fist bumps are shared. Everyone is super friendly. But if you go into RIDE thinking you’re the bomb, you fucking better be!!

    Favourite instructor and why?

Like choosing my favourite ice cream. Each instructor has their own unique flavour. All are at a competitive level and are a force all of their own. Each instructor has their own unique flair. Brooke was born as a rider. Tommy is just sheer joy. I adore Michael as his classes are like disco dancing. Barb for her hard hitting “don’t mess with me” class. Giulia makes me sweat like no other instructor. Noah is like “church for riders”. Meagan had a drive to her class that is like going on an intense road race. Shira has this infectious enthusiasm. But if I had to choose one, it would be my “Jules” as she drives me like no other.

    Best RIDE memory?

How can I choose just one. The day I actually hit all the moves for the first time. The day Kelly Ripa rode beside me and fist pumped me in class. The day I jumped on the scale at the doctors office and it showed I lost 45 pounds. The day I ran into my ex-boyfriend who had dumped me on my birthday and saw me in a bathing suit and the look on his face was “what was I thinking?” The day I bought a pair of jeans that were a 30 inch waste and they zipped up. Or how bout every fucking day when I get to go sweat off old age with guys ½ my age and I kick their asses!!

What other workouts do you do outside of RIDE?
Run, cycle, lift. Blah blah. The usual.

    Song you’ve got on repeat?

I have so many DJ friends who send me endless remixes of old favourites. The instructors at RIDE are very generous sharing their music, usually with a free download. Rowan plays a song called “Kill all the lights” that if I could bring my purse into class I would swing it over my head. But that’s just this week.

If you could brunch with any male/lady boss (past or present), who would it be?

Wouldn’t mind seeing all my old friends who died of AIDS in the 80s and 90s and show them how magnificent my life is because of all of their teachings. Probably wouldn’t turn down eating with Cher. But I don’t think she’s eaten since the 70s.

If you were to give a s/o to a local entrepreneur, who would it be?

This is the city of the charity and philanthropy goes hand in hand. I don’t love entrepreneurs as it’s all about money. If I were to pick someone who was trying to make a difference, trying to improve the community with fundraising for local and broken down charities, someone who is just trying to make the world a cheerier place…well, that person would be…me.

Describe your ideal Saturday in the city.

I like to wakeup at around 7:30. Coffee is a pretty crucial start to my morning. I got the Nespresso machine on my way to the bathroom. I check emails, read up on the news, chat with friends. Make sure my hair is like totally bitchin’. Then head off to spin class at 9:30 and do a killer RIDE. I like to meet up with a friend for a coffee and donut ( I just did a fucking RIDE, I eat whatever I want!) Then I’ll head home, paint for the afternoon. Make some dinner and invite friends over. Fill my house with paintings, great food and loads of laughter. Then watch something on Netflix, play “cards against humanity” and get to bed early because I usually have a spin class early on Sunday.

    What motivates you?

Fear of old age, or at least looking old. Age is just a box you check when your filling out a passport. Although it does take a few spins to wind all the way back to the 1961 box. I like my life and I love what I do. I also crack myself up a great deal. I know I’m not everyone’s cup of tea. But if you don’t like me, the line forms to the left.

Fave quote or words to live by?

“Face your fear and do it anyway”

    “Kick some ass”.

“When I want your opinion, i’ll give it to you”.

    “Bite me.”

    Last book you read was….

Dyslexic, not a great reader. I like art books. I thumb through those all the time.

What does RIDE mean to you?

    The world.

  • RIDE OR DIE | Michael Kong, RIDE Instructor

    ride cycle club

Meet Michael – an OG Instructor who’s been tapping it back since RIDE first opened its doors. Whether you’ve seen Michael from afar on Instagram (his bleach blonde flow and knockout abs are hard to miss), or you’re a regular at his classes, you know he brings it. Every damn time. Get to know Michael – his teaching style, love of RIDE, not-so-hidden talents and more.

    Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Victoria, British Columbia – where the air is clean and the people are kind. And surprisingly the music scene was quite ravey 😉

Can you remember your first RIDE class? How long did it take until you realized you wanted to become an instructor?
Ahahahaha – okay, sure. First week RIDE opened up I took Julie’s Sunday 11:30am class, had no idea what I was doing – I fell off the bike – I didn’t get that stupid red knob and I was also just starting to date Brookie’s friend – trying to impress him and also trying to make a good impression to Brooke – so I just kind of overdid my ego and BAM – dead. I looked at JJ in the eyes after class and was like “OH WELL! NEXT” haha now I teach the most at RIDE – so I did something right.

How would you describe your teaching style?
It is just you and me at the funnest party where all the people we think are hot are there and guess what? They think we’re hot too. We share big thoughts about being human and let each other in on how hard this life is – tho we still love life itself. No excuses tho – we gotta work – but I see you.

Best part of being an instructor is…
I have a hard time being proper – in fact I really struggle with expectation to behave. I think lots of people do. I am just like everyone else – things don’t make sense but I can’t pretend at all so when I get to be in a position to influence my friends and clients I really love seeing everyone else feel safe to shed their expectations of themselves. We are free in my RIDE – and instructing at RIDE unleashed that not only in me but also in my power to do that for others.

    Track you’ve had on repeat
Honestly I am pretty sure if you ask anyone what my song is at RIDE it’s Autoerotique – AUH (Atompushers remix) – because I like my ass up high and my face down low.

    AM or PM rides?
Dude – I teach at RIDE all days all times – I teach 13 classes – and I ride 5 classes a week out of my schedule. Sooooooo w/e next questioooonnn.

Favourite way to sweat outside of RIDE?
    HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

How has becoming a RIDE instructor changed you?
It unlocked me. I am free – thanks Ash Ander.

Go-to quote or words to live by?
    Let me live.

    Who motivates you?
My friends who breathe for me when I can’t. They aren’t just friends they are a life style too. I love them – I’d take any bullet for them. Just 16 friends who live an exclusive wide net. Some of these kids are your other instructors too.

    Favourite book?
    I can’t read.

    What’s your #1 life hack?
I can do anything under any state. Don’t know how I do it – you guys always ask me. Still don’t know myself. Oh and using vulnerability as strength.

Where can we find you on a Saturday afternoon in the city?
Teaching you guys and then Earls Yaletown patio. Great happy hour.

Any hidden or not so hidden talents?
I am a retired professional dancer that has done a lot of weird shit for choreographers. I also am really good at Math (snore) and I am extremely good at laughing.

If you could brunch with any person (past or present), who would it be and why?
My friends. Really they are the only people I can’t live without.

Best memory since you joined RIDE?
I met someone really special who used to work in Yaletown. Since that day nothing has been the same. All for the better I assure you.

#1 piece of advice for someone looking to have a killer RIDE?
It’s not above or below you – nothing in life is. It’s about finding safe spaces to be free – and in my RIDE I guarantee you that feeling of freedom.

What has you stoked on life right now?
I have a pretty sick tan and blonde hair.

What does RIDE mean to you?
It is my job, my life, and my priority. I need it.

Catch Michael on the podium at RIDE Yaletown – view schedule.
