    Genuine, loyal and funny.

    How long have you been coming to RIDE?

    Since the UNDRGRND baby!

    What motivates you to get your ass to class?

    The people, the energy and the music. Who doesn’t want to workout with some of the baddest in the city?

    How has RIDE impacted your life?

    Confidence. When you start to see both physical and mental changes, you know you’ve won.

    Outside of your 9-5 – tell us about all the badass things you’re up to?

    Trying to live my best life. Insert smile by Lil duval.

    In your opinion, what makes RIDE’s community so unique?

    The people by far! The positive energy and vibe that everybody brings inside that building is unreal!

    Favourite Instructor and why?

    Come on, at least let me pick 2! Alex – beast mode all the time! Emily – positive vibes like no other!

    Best RIDE memory?

    When I completed 30 RIDES in 30 days just because! @jonathancharles_ we killed that!

    What other workouts do you do outside of RIDE?

    Nada! Just RIDE!

    Meet Sarah – a Toronto Instructor, also known as theme RIDE Queen and an all around vibrant human. Every class Sarah teaches is fuelled with an undeniable passion for creating a sweaty, challenging, heart opening RIDE. Her love of fitness, music and fun is both motivating and inspiring.

    Where did you grow up?

    Born in Montreal, but raised in our nations capital.

    Can you remember your first RIDE class?

    I was visiting Vancouver in the fall of 2015 for a friend’s wedding and I tried Brooke’s class after hearing tremendous reviews.

    I considered myself a strong Rider (riding multiple times a week) and I remember having to sit down which was a real surprise.

    Brooke took my breath away, literally! That 50 minute experience left me inspired, and immediately reserving my next class with Julie early the next morning, I was hooked!

    How long did it take until you realized you wanted to become an instructor?

    After my first few RIDE classes, I knew I wanted to join the family. Unfortunately at that time, living in Toronto, that was not an option. Fast forward to the fall of 2016, being an avid instagram’er, I saw a posting for RIDE’s new studio opening up in Toronto…the rest is history.

    How would you describe your teaching style?

    A rollercoaster of emotions. We rage, we cry, we laugh and we cheer. I try to connect with every Rider.

    I design my classes to appeal to and challenge all Riders, regardless of their skill and experience.

    Jogs, sprints, hills, fast legs, with some unique choreography sprinkled throughout. I strive to create an extraordinary environment where Riders are motivated to push their personal limits and give it their all.

    Best part of being an Instructor is…

    Getting a mic, a stage and an audience allows me to give life to my inner pop star.

    For 50 minutes at a time, I get to be an enter-trainer (get it?) helping Riders achieve their fitness goals, getting a reprieve from the every day hustle, and challenging themselves.

    Being an early riser, I love the AM RIDES, however, my 8:10pm class is a great way to end a day.

    How has becoming a RIDE Instructor changed you?

    RIDE has given me the confidence to show the world my true self. RIDE has given me the confidence and courage to keep challenging myself and pushing my personal limits.

    Go-to quote or words to live by?

    If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.

    Who motivates you?

    My RIDE or DIE. My husband. Nate ?

    Favourite book?

    I don’t have a favourite book. I dedicate that time to TV. My favourite shows are Grey’s Anatomy, This is Us and Game of Thrones.

    What’s your #1 life hack?

    Grande blonde in Venti cup.

    Where can we find you on a Saturday afternoon in the city?

    Wandering Ossington after my 12:50 class enjoying a post class treat, an oat milk latte from Pilot.

    Any hidden or not so hidden talents?

    Competitive flossing

    If you could brunch with any person (past or present), who would it be and why?

    James Corden. But maybe we’ll just go to a drive-thru and quickly proceed to carpool karaoke.

    Best memory since you joined RIDE?

    As most of you know, I love themed RIDES. There is always one or two crowd favourites that everyone knows the words to. Once I hear the voices rise, I will turn the music down and let the crowd shine.

    The first time it happened was to Britney Spears’ “lucky”, it was magical.

    #1 piece of advice for someone looking to have a killer RIDE?

    You’ve got 50 minutes to yourself, take a break from reality, close your eyes, listen carefully and open up your heart. Allow yourself to fall in love with the sound that fills the room – the music, the flywheel, your heart racing and your sweat dripping.

    What has you stoked on life right now?

    If you asked me a few months ago I would have said Coachella 2019, however, I will be staying in Toronto this year as Nate and I are expecting our first little one this summer!

    What does RIDE mean to you?

    Family. Happiness. My oasis.

    Every single time I walk through the studio doors I become intoxicated with the contagious energy from every staff member and Rider. This place is special, it has helped me transform into my best self and allowed meet some amazing people who have now become family. I can’t imagine not having RIDE in my life, it will always have a place in my heart.

    Meet Meagan – a Vancouver Instructor who brings authenticity, fire and inspiration to every RIDE she teaches. She’ll motivate you to be your best self on the bike, always leading with a big heart and love for music.

    Where did you grow up?

    I’m North Shore born and raised. I don’t know why I’m always embarrassed to say I’m from West Van, it was a wonderful place to grow up honestly.

    Can you remember your first RIDE class? How long did it take until you realized you wanted to become an Instructor?

    I do – it was one of Shira’s family and friends RIDES, and when she asked me after if I liked it I responded with “meh, it’s just not for me”. Needless to say it took a while for me to even fathom being on the podium. Actually until Ashley suggested it! I don’t even think I thought I could do it once training was complete and I was already teaching. The whole process was incredibly challenging in the best of ways. Hard to ever believe you’re confident enough to be a RIDE Instructor 😉

    How would you describe your teaching style?

    Mixed bag – sometimes I’m intense and have no mercy for the insane athleticism in the room, some days I’m a goofy idiot, others I have so much I want to say that it becomes more about using the stage to give meaningful reminders. Kinda like real life I suppose…

    Best part of being an instructor is…

    ….besides the local fame? Joking! I think it’s that I get to live out my lifelong dream of being a DJ. Music has never not been at the forefront of my life and getting to move in synchronicity with 40 other people to songs that give me a visceral reaction lights me right up inside. Oh and being on the podium has taught me that what other people think of me is none of my business.

    Track you’ve had on repeat?

    PAAX (tulum) – epico and forever and always London Grammar – hey now (Arty remix). Nail the lights and these are both gold.

    AM or PM RIDES?

    AM all the way. Fire it up for the day!

    Favourite way to sweat outside of RIDE?

    I try and get in a couple of days weight training a week, but I’m all about mixing it up. Boxing, dancing, the class, you name it I’ll try it.

    How has becoming a RIDE Instructor changed you?

    Besides the obvious health benefits I’d say I’ve given myself permission to be unapologetically myself on and off the podium. I really feel as though we are all repressed in many ways, and each time I teach, a little something gets shaken up and unearthed. Maybe that’s what’s so addicting about it, the constant growth.

    Go-to quote or words to live by?

    Reminder to everyone that “your best” doesn’t mean pushing yourself to your breaking point. “Your best” means the best you can do while being the best you. Get enough sleep, give yourself breaks, listen to your limits. “Your best” is better when you’re happy and healthy.

    Who motivates you?

    In the room the Riders motivate me! I can’t count the amount of times I’ve looked around totally gassed and my front row is just givin’ er. Outside the room, my relationship motivates me. It’s pretty tough not to always want to be improving for your partner.

    Favourite book?

    The Brain that Changes Itself by Norman Doidge – I’m so obsessed with the human body and brain and the things we are continually learning about them.

    What’s your #1 life hack?

    Using my gas cap as a lever for the pump so I don’t have to freeze my a$$ off at the gas station.

    Where can we find you on a Saturday afternoon in the city?

    Probably brunching somewhere after class with friends or in the woods with my beloved pooch.

    Any hidden or not so hidden talents?

    I can tie a maraschino cherry stem in a knot with my tongue.

    If you could brunch with any person (past or present), who would it be and why?

    My mom. Because there will be a day when I can’t anymore and I want to take all the time I can get. I’d say Jason Momoa or something but my mom is smarter and cooler AND better looking soooooo….

    Best memory since you joined RIDE?

    Probably staring at Kelly Ripa and her massive front row smile in the face, twice!

    #1 piece of advice for someone looking to have a killer RIDE?

    Haha have a crappy day first? No, I kid. Find the right Instructor for you, shut off the mind, lead with the heart and body, find the edge you think you can’t push past, then take a deep breath and push past it.

    What has you stoked on life right now?

    People speaking out! Seems to me that there’s a recent rise in voices and a willingness to listen. I love that sh*t. Let’s not be afraid to ruffle some feathers.

    What does RIDE mean to you?

    In one word I’d say transformation. The amount of lives I’ve witnessed RCC positively impact is pretty neat. Physical, mental and emotional transformations are happening in that room every day and I couldn’t feel more proud to be a small part of them.

  • RIDE OR DIE | Jess Graves, Instructor

    Meet Jess – originally a Vancouver Rider, turned Vancouver Instructor, who now teaches at our Ossington Studio with her infamous class, The Graveyard, Sundays at 11:45am. Jess will make you work hard, overcome obstacles and encourage you to truly show up for yourself – all while boasting a 1000 watt smile and a whole lot of charm.

    Where did you grow up?

    I grew up just outside of Vancouver in the burbs’ and moved to Toronto almost exactly a year ago. Don’t ask me which city I like better 😉

    Can you remember your first RIDE class? How long did it take until you realized you wanted to become an Instructor?

    My first RIDE class was with JJ at the Hamilton studio in February 2015 – it was a disaster (me, not the class). I couldn’t find the beat, the choreography was a big no for me, and I was sore for at least a week after. After a four-month hiatus, I forced myself back in the saddle, determined to simply “not suck”. It took me a while (slight understatement), but once I got the beat, I moved from the back row to the second row. Once the choreography clicked, I made my way up to the front row. Once I got to know and love the incredible RIDE community, I was fully addicted to the workout and the feeling.

    As for becoming an Instructor, I knew I loved riding and admired each Instructor, but never in my wildest dreams believed I could get up on that podium in front of all of those people and lead a class. It took a couple of friends and several conversations to convince me (aka force me) to audition. Let’s just say I’m grateful for those people who have pushed me and motivated me when I didn’t believe in myself. I owe you one.

    How would you describe your teaching style?

    It’s intentional, high energy and motivating, while at the same time being playful, intimate, and challenging – which remains true to who I am as a person outside of RIDE. I have a hard time not smiling when I am up on that podium, even in my most serious moments.

    Dani “Pizza” Pagnan describes my classes as: “like an after party everyone wants to be invited to, rowdy, loud and always fun.”

    Best part of being an Instructor is…

    Aside from the sweat, playing music I love and running around a dark room feeling 100% like myself, I can without a doubt say the people: the Instructors, the entire front desk staff and the clients. I love walking into the studio, knowing I am going to see dozens of beautiful faces that I not only love and relate to, but who I have deep admiration and respect for. I’ve met my best friends (both in Vancouver and Toronto), and genuinely feel a part of something so much bigger than myself. I am forever inspired by the people and to the community.

    Track you’ve had on repeat?

    If you know me and my class, you know my favourite after arms song is “My Princess” by Lexer (extended, with lyrics). Also very into “Let me Feel” by Jeremy Olander is currently playing after my first Toronto Coda experience.

    AM or PM RIDES?

    PM. Unless it’s the Sunday 11:45AM “Graveyard” class (does that still count as AM?).

    Favourite way to sweat outside of RIDE?

    Barry’s Bootcamp with the morning crew. Hands down.

    How has becoming a RIDE Instructor changed you?

    RIDE has helped me find out who I am. If you had asked me a few years ago if I ever thought I could teach in front of 56 people, I would have laughed (and then maybe cried). RIDE has made me more confident and more acutely aware of other people and their feelings, and has given me a network of friends that feel like family.

    RIDE has also changed all of my dance moves into pulses, tap backs and two up two back – which might be for the best anyway (you won’t find “dancing” in the hidden talents question below).

    Go-to quote or words to live by?

    “If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.” – Maya Angelou.

    Who motivates you?

    Tyler, for being the hardest working person I know inside the studio (world record of 30 RIDE’s in 13 days) and outside the studio. My family, friends, fellow Instructors, front desk staff and clients – basically everyone that I surround myself with, which makes me feel pretty damn lucky.

    Favourite book?

    Can’t choose just one: “To Shake The Sleeping Self” – Jedidiah Jenkins, All The Light We Cannot See – Anthony Doerr and When Breath Becomes Air – Paul Kalanithi.

    What’s your #1 life hack?

    Crest White Strips.

    Where can we find you on a Saturday afternoon in the city?

    I live on Ossington, so I usually don’t stray too far from RIDE (because why would you?). You’ll find me either at the studio or Barry’s Bootcamp, followed by fries and a glass of wine at Union with people I love. During the summer, you’ll always find me at Trinity Bellwoods park drinking rosé, getting my tan on and petting all the dogs I can get my hands on. #hideyodogs

    Any hidden or not so hidden talents?

    I can RIDE an outdoor bike decently fast and far – who would’ve thought, bikes can actually move! And karaoke – I make those high notes my bitch!

    If you could brunch with any person (past or present), who would it be and why?

    My Aunt. I would love to share a laugh with her again.

    Best memory since you joined RIDE?

    I have two amazing memories that will always stand out to me.

    My first-ever friends and family co-teach with Barb in the North Van Underground. I was incredibly nervous leading up to class, however all those emotions left my mind as soon as the music started. We had the time of our lives, running around the tiny (and ridiculously hot, and quite frankly, weird room) cheering each other and every other Rider on. It was like Hurricane Barb and Hurricane Jess – I don’t think Lonsdale knew what hit them.

    Right after class, Julie told both of us we would be getting community classes at the Hamilton studio–- it was an epic milestone of sheer joy that I will never forget. Thanks Barb for always being my stage Mom and number one fan!!

    Teaching Dez’s birthday class at the Ossington Studio last Fall was absolutely epic – the room was filled with all of Toronto’s best – the energy was truly electric and nothing quite like I’ve ever experienced. That RIDE will be hard to beat. Thanks Dez for bringing us all together <3

    #1 piece of advice for someone looking to have a killer RIDE?

    Only you are in control of your RIDE, no one else – so whether it’s your first time or your fiftieth time in that room, let it be and embrace all the feels. Drop your head, close your heads, smile, laugh, or yell – you do you. Just make sure you turn up that tension dial!

    What has you stoked on life right now?

    Dreaming of summer – patios, sunshine and all the amazing upcoming shows and festivals.

    What does RIDE mean to you?

    RIDE means grit, inspiration, determination, resilience, no-judgement, acceptance, motivation, perseverance, laughter, sweat, community, friendship and so so much more. RIDE means family. RIDE means home. RIDE is my sanctuary.

    Meet Taylor – a Vancouver Instructor who has been riding since the Hamilton UNDRGRND days. You can expect high energy, lots of fire and long-ass isolations that don’t feel so long thanks to his fun vibe and sense of humour (get ready to crack a smile or two).

    Where did you grow up?

    Area code 780 (Edmonton, Alberta). You can often catch me wearing a “Still In Edmonton” sweater. I love Vancouver, but I’m proud to be from YEG.

    Can you remember your first RIDE class? How long did it take until you realized you wanted to become an Instructor?

    First RIDE was in the basement of Gastown with a couple of bikes and some Dyson fans keeping us cool – the OG training grounds before Hamilton opened. I had no idea I’d become an Instructor one day and now I can’t see myself ever stopping.

    Best part of being an Instructor is…

    Connecting with everyone on and off the bike. RIDE is more than just a spin studio. You become a part of a community of “RIDE or DIES” that I look forward to seeing every week.

    AM or PM RIDES?

    PM RIDES. Not saying I’m not a morning person, but I’m not a morning person. In all seriousness though, after a long day of work, nothing’s better than getting on the bike and just letting everything go.

    Favourite way to sweat outside of RIDE?

    In the gym. It’s a place of relaxation for me where I can listen to music and go at my own pace.

    How has becoming a RIDE Instructor changed you?

    It’s given me a platform to get in front of people and share my love for fitness with them.

    Lose Yourself by Eminem. I still picture 12 year old me listening to that song. 16 years later and still relevant.

    Who motivates you?

    My girlfriend. She’s basically my part-time manager.

    Favourite book?

    Guilty. It’s been a while since I’ve made the time to read a book.

    What’s your #1 life hack?

    Ironing my shirts. I love a crisp tee shirt.

    Where can we find you on a Saturday afternoon in the city?

    If the sun is out, riding my bike along the seawall to the beach. A place you can find me for hours.

    I can make the best french fries and chicken wings. Oh and chips with guac.

    Best memory since you joined RIDE?

    The first class I taught, November 14th 2017. I still have the playlist saved on my computer.

    #1 piece of advice for someone looking to have a killer RIDE?

    Don’t be afraid to challenge yourself. Although RIDE is a group fitness class, it’s a very personal experience. Find the Instructor that challenges you and the rest will fall into place.

    What has you stoked on life right now?

    Socks. If you know you know.

    What does RIDE mean to you?

    Family. RIDE is more than a fitness studio, it’s a place where you go to meet people and make real connections.

    Get to know Natty – a die-hard Toronto Rider who has been coming to RIDE for over two years. If Natty is riding, you’ll likely know it – his energy and enthusiasm are infectious. We’re so grateful to have Natty as part of our Ossington community.

    What do you do for your 9-5?

    I recently quit my 9-5 to focus on filmmaking. I’m a writer and director. My first feature EDGING can be rented or copped here. Pardon the plug, but that’s the gig.

    If your bestie were to describe you in three words, what would they be?

    He’s still dancing?

    How long have you been coming to RIDE?

    Um, let me check. *scrolls through hundreds of class reminder emails* nearly two years? Wow. That’s longer than almost all the relationships I’ve been in.

    What motivates you to get your ass to class?

    If I don’t go to a class most days I get punchy and unpleasant to be around. It is a public service.

    How has RIDE impacted your life?

    To be a person that exercises every day has had all the obvious health benefits like sleeping better, but mostly it allows me to eat and drink everything I’d like to. Sometimes if I’m up against a plot problem I’ll take the problem into the class and something in the dark and the mania frees up an extra bit of freedom to think.

    Outside of your 9-5 – tell us about all the badass things you’re up to

    Mostly I just think about movies, which was a problem at my 9-5, but I also garden. This summer I’m looking forward to trying my hand at a rose bush that I’m transplanting from my grandparents house.

    In your opinion, what makes RIDE’s community so unique?

    Everyone’s so good looking.

    Favourite Instructor and why?

    Nah, no favourites. Whoever will play some dancehall, soca, or Beanie Sigel tho.

    Best RIDE memory?

    Rebecca’s riddim RIDE was the best I’ve ever felt in that room. Everyone there was trying to dance.

    What other workouts do you do outside of RIDE?

    Tennis. Basketball. Trying to do some yoga to balance out the loud with some quiet.

    Song you’ve got on repeat?

    Koffee – Toast ‘Gratitude is a must’

    If you could brunch with any male/lady boss (past or present), who would it be?

    Spike Lee, but I’d rather it be dinner.

    If you were to give a s/o to a local entrepreneur, who would it be?

    I very heavily f*ck with The Legends League, who have a store on Camden and Outclass, who have a store at College and Dufferin. Both thoroughly Torontonian clothing lines and made up of good peoples and friends.

    Describe your ideal Saturday in the city.

    It’s June, like 16 degrees at nine in the morning, I’m tired from being out the night before. I water the backyard with a cup of coffee and then take a half nap on the couch on the deck.
    The first round of lettuce is ready to harvest so I pull up a couple heads and wash them for later. My dog and I walk to Schmaltz Appetizing on Dupont and she eats some fish skin while I have a bagel with lox, capers and hot peppers.

    Now it’s like, eleven, and I bike down to RIDE. After showering, I bike over to the lightbox and spend the days hot hours in the theatre. I sweat. After the film, I head home, stopping at Fiesta Farms for some groceries and the liquor store.

    Then it’s a bbq. Prolly like 4 by now and folks start showing up in the backyard. Might make some chicken, a salad with that lettuce from earlier. I’m not really in charge of the food. Then that’s the night, frankly. If I’m good, I’ll have written a couple pages after the film and before the bbq. I’ll start cleaning up around 11:30.

    Who motivates you?

    The people I make films with. Always trying to justify the trust they put in me.

    What does RIDE mean to you?

    I know that at some point almost every day, I’ll feel good. And it’s powerful to only have to rely on myself for that.

    Meet Cat – an Ossington Instructor who draws people in with her unique combination of kindness and motivation. She is approachable, fun, and leads every RIDE in a way that makes Riders feel supported and encouraged.

    Where did you grow up?

    Ottawa!

    Can you remember your first RIDE class? How long did it take until you realized you wanted to become an Instructor?

    My first RIDE class was with Ash during our auditions. I was simultaneously amazed and terrified. I couldn’t catch the beat, but knew it was something really special that I had to be a part of.

    How would you describe your teaching style?

    Balanced. I try to let the music guide my classes. I love really heavy, intense bangers but I also really appreciate the quiet, calm moments (the “after arms” moments, if you will). I always hope to give Riders the space to let go and lose themselves in the music, connecting with whatever it is they are feeling.

    Best part of being an Instructor is…

    There are so many incredible things about being an Instructor. I’m beyond grateful that I get to do it. The best part is probably being able to meet and connect with so many amazing people. The second-best thing is watching Riders grow. I’ve loved watching people start out in the back row, slowly make their way to the front, and then do crazy things like stand for an entire fast legs track (you guys know who you are!). The commitment to constant challenge and growth is inspiring.

    Track you’ve had on repeat?

    GUAP! Just kidding, I think I’ve outgrown that one. This changes all the time but right now it’s Call to Arms by Gareth Emery (thanks, Kyle!). Otherwise, I’m always obsessed with Lane 8 and Rufus du Sol.

    AM or PM RIDES?

    AM for sure. It’s the best way to start the day.

    Favourite way to sweat outside of RIDE?

    It depends on what I’m in the mood for. If I need my ass-kicked it’s Barry’s Bootcamp or F45. If I need something a little more chill it’s usually MISFITSTUDIO.

    How has becoming a RIDE Instructor changed you?

    Becoming an Instructor has made me much more confident and comfortable in my own skin. I take myself a lot less seriously than I used to. Those who know me well know that I can be shy and being in front of a large group of people is kind of my version of hell. Now, being on that podium has helped me embrace all that vulnerability.     He’s going to kill me for saying this, but, John Cengarle. He makes time for all of the things he’s passionate about and commits to them 100%.

    If you ride 9:35AM on a Saturday you can be first in line for brunch at Union ?

    I’m not sure if you’ve seen me karaoke…

    I also have an exceptionally good memory, mostly for useless information.

    If you could brunch with any person (past or present), who would it be and why?

    I’m notoriously indecisive so this one is hard and changes all the time. The Psychotherapist in me wants to say someone infamous so I could really pick their brain. The music lover in me wants to say Avicii. I just finished watching his documentary and it showcased both his genius and his struggles. The sentimental part of me wants to say all of my girlfriends near and far. I miss the ones I don’t see very often and it’s always so special when we are all together.

    Best memory since you joined RIDE?

    There are honestly way too many to count but right now top of mind is the Spice Girls RIDE. It was absolute chaos, but it was hilarious. I’m still trying to get Ash to approve a reunion RIDE (if you’re reading, please support me in this). Dez’s birthday RIDE was also incredible. The room was full of strong Riders. The energy was infectious. Alex got stitches. Overall 10/10.

    #1 piece of advice for someone looking to have a killer RIDE?

    Get out of your head. It’s so easy to overthink and get intimidated. It’s also so easy to carry the day’s stress or worries into the room. Don’t let that happen. Those 50 minutes are all yours. Let go, connect with the music, and have a damn good time.

    What has you stoked on life right now?

    Life is pretty great right now. I love the start of a New Year. It’s a great opportunity to reset and get excited about all the amazing things coming up in the year ahead.

    What does RIDE mean to you?

    To me, RIDE is my second home. It’s one of the few places I actually forget about what’s outside that room and can just be present. I can let go and be myself. The community, energy, support, and pure joy that comes out of that place is second to none.

Whether it’s your first time at RIDE or your 200th, it’s impossible to not feed off of Matt’s incredible energy and love for music. If you’re looking for a mix of fun and intensity, Matt’s got you.

    Where did you grow up?

    I grew up in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario; moved to Toronto about 4 years ago. Currently I work at Facebook/Instagram Canada and as an instructor at RIDE!

    Can you remember your first RIDE class? How long did it take until you realized you wanted to become an Instructor?

    Ah yes, my first RIDE. I took Sarah’s class in April 2017 – it was unlike any other fitness or spin class I had ever taken. I was hooked immediately, especially to the 6AMs. I truthfully did not ever think I would be an Instructor; a few friends/colleagues encouraged me, and I reached out to a few of the instructors I knew. The process was tough – training, finding your voice, finding your style, etc. However, once I taught my first official class (Dec 2017), I was all in.

    How would you describe your teaching style?

    My teaching style is the exact same as my RIDE style; high energy, high intensity. I completely let go when I RIDE, and completely let go when I teach. My hope is that my energy is infectious and encourages those in my class to let go and bring their own energy/RIDE style as well!

    Best part of being an Instructor is…

    Amongst all the amazing parts of teaching (i.e coaching, motivating, meeting new people, etc.) one of my favourite parts is picking the perfect song, at the perfect moment, for the perfect person. When you do that, you create a very cool, special moment. Kyle did this in one of my first RIDES with him; he played Runaway – Kanye West after arms, and even years later, I still go back to that incredible moment, where I got lost and slipped into flow. Creating moments like this is my favourite part of being an Instructor.

    Track you’ve had on repeat?

    Going Bad – Meek Mill & Drake.

    AM or PM rides?

    Easy – 6AM. The group that gets together at 6AM are all the same type of Rider; they are crazy, type-A, high intensity, driven people who are looking to crush their day by starting with an insane workout. Going to 6AM inspires me and pushes me to go harder.

    Favourite way to sweat outside of RIDE?

    Brendan’s Barry’s Bootcamp class or Meg’s Flow in the 6ix Yoga Tree class.

    How has becoming a RIDE Instructor changed you?

    Being a RIDE Instructor has not necessarily changed me, but has reminded me about the importance of authenticity. Those people, riders, instructors, staffers who come to RIDE and bring their full, true selves are the ones that get the most out of the experience. If anything, RIDE has brought me confidence in not only the fitness/Instructor side of myself, but the person I am outside of RIDE.

    Favourite book?

    Open – Andre Agassi; Steve Jobs – Walter Isaacson; Shoe Dog – Phil Knight. (I can’t choose just one!)

    What’s your #1 life hack?

    Wake up early.

    Where can we find you on a Saturday afternoon in the city?

    Coffee Shop (Jimmys, Dark Horse, Quantuum) or napping (couch, bed, floor).

    Best memory since you joined RIDE?

    There’s been a lot of amazing memories since joining RIDE. The one that stands out is my first class back from my time off (September 18th, 2018). It was the loudest, craziest, most supportive group of people I’ve ever had the chance to RIDE with. It was pretty special.

    #1 piece of advice for someone looking to have a killer RIDE?

    Your mind will give up before your body will. Throughout class, your mind will tell you that you are too tired; your mind will tell you that you are not fit enough; your mind will tell you to sit down and will urge you to give up. If you actively don’t listen, and allow your body to keep pushing, you will have a killer RIDE. You will not only be stronger physically, but you will be stronger mentally.

    What does RIDE mean to you?

    There’s a short answer and VERY long answer to this. Short answer is that Ride is more than just a fitness studio. It’s a physically challenging workout for those trying to go harder and get stronger; it’s a mental outlet to let go & find flow; and most importantly it is a community of riders, instructors and staffers all supporting each other. It’s a really cool place; I am incredibly lucky to part of it.

    Meet Rebecca – an Ossington Instructor known for her signature hip hop vibe. She’s fun-loving, approachable, and offers a RIDE experience that is the perfect combination of a great sweat and fun time.

    Where did you grow up?

    I grew up in Scarborough, in a small area called 400. Honestly, I grew up in the hood. It was an adventure everyday and I loved it.

    Can you remember your first RIDE class? How long did it take until you realized you wanted to become an Instructor?

    My first ever RIDE class was actually my audition to be a RIDE Instructor. It.was.disaster. I had no idea what they hell I was doing, and for some odd reason I left and said, I think I should do this. I e-mailed Ashley after that audition and said I know it looked BANANAS, but I can do this.

    How would you describe your teaching style?

    Basement bashment. You know that old Sean Paul video when the guy yells out… “Stop banging on the damn furnace”… it’s like that.

    Best part of being an Instructor is…

    I get to build a space of inclusiveness and belonging for a lot different people. Of course I play a lot of Hip Hop, but I play everything from Old and New School, Afro Beats, Pop and Reggae and EDM … nothing gets untouched. It makes me so happy when people feel important and included in spaces where they might feel slightly outside of a certain box.

    Another amazing part of this job is I get to take care of people’s hearts, physically and emotionally. I want their hearts to be happy and healthy. I don’t give a shit about weight. I want people to have fun. I want them to forget about anything that won’t serve them in that room and out. I want them to enjoy life, one song at a time.

    Last but not least, someone actually pays me to workout! I think this one of the most genius decisions I’ve ever made lol.

    Track you’ve had on repeat?

    THIS IS HARD! My music consumption rate is ridiculous. I’ll just go for a staple like Bey’s Lemonade.

    AM or PM RIDES?

    Not a morning person. PM.

    Favourite way to sweat outside of RIDE?

    Walking around parking lots looking for my car.

    How has becoming a RIDE Instructor changed you?

    I have an overwhelming sense of gratitude doing this job. I wake up feeling grateful, lucky, and motivated.

    The way other people feel about you, is none of your business.

    Who motivates you?

    HAILE (pronounced ‘Hi-Lay’). My daughter. My life. She drives me insane and then says something hilarious and I get over it. She’s SO goddamn funny. She keeps me present and motivated.

    The Conscious Parent. – my mind was blown.
    Still have to remind myself to separate my authentic self from my ego. Work in progress.

    I’m not shallow… although money, cars and hoes seems to come up a lot in conversation.

    Best memory since you joined RIDE?

    Winter said it in her BIO. We were so new and taught class together that felt like a disaster, but by the end of it, we were doing the Dougie in the middle of the room together and it was magical lol.

    Also, shooting that badass RIDE commercial for the new private label was awesome!

    Close your eyes and be present. Every class is a new adventure.

    What has you stoked on life right now?

    I am SO excited for the holidays to slow down my life and enjoy some quality time with my family.

    What does RIDE mean to you?

    Woooow. When you’re having a good day, RIDE makes it better. When you’re having a bad day, RIDE makes it better. RIDE = happiness.

  • RIDE Kits | The Countdown is On

    With our Kitsilano studio opening just around the corner, we wanted to take a moment to put the spotlight on some of the team behind RIDE Kits– those that have been busy planning, training and getting the studio ready for opening day. We sat down with Ashley Ander, RIDE co-founder, and Brooke Roth, our Lead Instructor, to chat about the studio and all there is to get excited about.

    Tell us a bit about your background and what led you to opening RIDE Kits!

    Ashley: I am one of the co-founders which means I’m an Instructor but I also manage the experience and image from the RIDE to our product. When we were looking for a 3rd location in Vancouver, we wanted to open a space where we could build on the community already in place. Kits already has it, we just want to connect the dots with our locations and have them bring the energies of our beautiful city together.

    Brooke: I have been teaching for many years all over Kits, however RIDE was the first DT studio I had ever taught at and it changed spinning for me in the best way – I can’t imagine teaching anywhere else. When I found out they were opening in Kits I was so excited and luckily I got offered the position of Lead Instructor so life is good!

    If you were to describe the RIDE Kits community in 3 words, what would they be?

    Ashley: Active, vibrant, spirited

    Brooke: Loyal, caffeinated, workoutaholics?

    Favourite place to grab coffee or a snack between classes in Kits?

    Ashley: Their There or Glory Juice Co.

    How is the RIDE training going with our new Kits instructors?

    Ashley: Everyone who’s currently in training is so passionate about the RIDE brand and the experience they get to build/create in their classes. They have put in many, many hours throughout our training process and it’s really going to be spectacular! I’m so excited for our new instructors to join the team and create their VIBE.

    Brooke: Training is going amazing! We were so surprised by the talent we have acquired just by reaching to our favourite Riders and instructors in the community. Everyone is so different, it’s going to be wild!

    What can we expect from the RIDE Kits experience?

    Ashley: You can expect the same warm welcome and that sweaty intimate RIDE that you would get walking into any of our studios! We look forward to meeting new faces, seeing some regulars and showing you through our new space!

    Brooke: RIDE Kits will facilitate the same RIDE experience of all our studios! Fast paced, motivational instructors and tons of fun!

    How many classes can we expect each week?

    Ashley: The first two weeks we will be playing with some class times! However you will definitely see morning, midday and evening RIDES throughout the week(s)!

    S/O to a local studio who’s workout compliments RIDE?

    Ashley: There are so many cross training options within the community to compliment your RIDE! From classes at TurF, Lagree, Better Bodies, Semperviva, Barre and YYoga. There are just so many great fitness options in Kits that are making heaps of positive impact in this world.

    Brooke: Obsessed with The class by Taryn Toomey at TurF and next up met.a BAND! A good Kits seawall run to flush the legs, too!

    Where should our Riders head for post-RIDE fuel?

    Ashley: Just to name a few – TurF, Kokomo, Glory Juice Co., Be Fresh, Their There and Whole foods.

    Will there be a mix of old and new instructors?

    Ashley: Of course! Kits will have the best of all RIDE worlds making sure that everything is as authentically RIDE as possible.

    Anything else exciting you’d like to share?

    Ashley: I am super excited to see all the new faces that come in to experience RIDE for their first time. Seeing our community of Riders grow inspires me everyday and I cannot wait to create a bigger RIDE community within Vancouver. If I can make one person leave the studio with an uncontrollable smile, I’ve done my job.
